    Why Is Weight Loss So Important?

    Losing weight is much more important than just looking good. According to the National Institute of Health, obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., close behind tobacco use.

    Losing weight can help you live a longer, happier life, but the opposite is also true.

    Not only can obesity itself result in early death, it can cause other diseases which can also result in early death. Obesity can result in early death from heart attack, stroke, diabetes, cancer and result in other debilitating diseases including arthritis, liver and kidney disease, sleep apnea, and depression.

    Research at Oxford University found that moderate obesity reduces life expectancy by about 3 years, and The National Institute of Health found extreme obesity may shorten life expectancy up to 14 years. It showed that the most overweight participants had a 40 to 80% higher risk of dying from cancer.

    Obesity can also worsen our quality of life. According to a January 2001 article in the medical journal Pain, obesity nearly doubles the risk of chronic pain.

    So the most logical thing to do is go on a diet, but research now shows that diets don’t often work.

    Yo Yo Dieting

    Many people spend hundreds of dollars to go on weight loss programs. They may try to lose weight by following the keto diet, weight loss programs, low carbohydrate diet, Mediterranean diet, paleo diet, pescatarian diet, intermittent fasting or a starvation diet. Many find that the weight they lost quickly reappears months later. Also, studies show that yo-yo dieting can have detrimental effects on health.

     

    Why Diets Don’t Work

    Weight loss research confirms that diets don’t work.

    Diets don’t work because many diets rely on willpower. They fail to address the main cause of obesity – emotional eating.

    This is why some obese people may lose weight temporarily, only to eventually gain it back several months later when their willpower is depleted, and their subconscious mind regains control.

    Weight loss research shows that one of the most effective ways to allow the subconscious mind to accept being slim is through hypnosis.

    Many approaches use hypnosis for achieving your ideal weight. Through individual sessions, the hypnotist can find the right approach for you. This may include triggering a relaxed and calm state whenever you have an emotional craving for food, uncovering and correcting any subconscious causes for the excess weight, or using gastric band hypnosis.

    Studies on Hypnosis for Weight Loss

    To follow are some studies that show the long-term effectiveness of hypnosis to not only lose weight, but to keep it off.

    Hypnosis was found to be 30 times more effective for weight loss in a study involving 60 females, at least 20% overweight. The hypnosis group lost an average of 17 lbs vs. an average of .5 lbs lost by the control group.

    The study also showed that active participation in the hypnotherapy program, and not the use of hypnotherapy tapes was credited with the weight loss results.

    A study involving 109 patients who completed a behavioral treatment for weight loss either with or without the addition of hypnosis. At the 2-year follow-up, the hypnosis subjects continued to lose significant weight, while those that only received behavioral treatment showed little further change. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology 1985.

    People who received hypnosis lost more weight than 70% of other weight loss treatments and kept it off 2 years later according to a meta-analysis involving 18 studies using cognitive behavioral therapy, such as relaxation training, guided imagery, self -monitoring or goal setting with the same therapy supplemented by hypnosis.

    An additional weight loss study of the effect of adding hypnosis to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for weight loss indicated that the benefits of hypnosis increased substantially over time.

    Another weight loss study published in 1996 reported on an analysis of five weight loss studies and showed that weight loss reported in the five studies indicates that hypnosis can more than double the effects of traditional weight loss approaches.

    A trial with 156 participants, who received 9 weekly individual hypnosis sessions plus behavior-modification treatments were compared with results from those who received behavior-modification treatment alone. On average, the hypnosis group had lost 7 kg of weight more than the control group at the 2-year follow-up.

    A study, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, divided people into two groups.  The members of the first group were treated with diet and exercise, without the addition of hypnosis. The members of the second group were given the same diet and exercise treatment and were also treated with hypnosis. After 9 weeks both groups lost weight. At 8-month and 2-year follow-ups, the group that did not have hypnosis gained most of their weight back. The group that had hypnosis continued to lose weight during an 8 month and two-year follow-up.  Far more people in the hypnosis group met their long-term weight-loss goals. The most important thing to realize is that the hypnosis group continued the eating and exercise habits that were changed through hypnosis, while the group that didn’t have hypnosis did not.

    From this study, it is clear that hypnosis supports adherence to diet and exercise.

    Another study investigated the effects of hypnosis in weight loss for people at least 20% overweight. The group was split into one group that had hypnosis and another group that did not.  Both groups being given weight-loss behavioral treatments and counseling. They found that the group using hypnosis lost an average of 17 pounds while the group that didn’t receive hypnosis only lost ½ pound at the 6-month follow-up. They also found that social and educational backgrounds and the ability to being hypnotized and had nothing to do with the results.

    Another study published in the “Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology,” investigated the effects of hypnosis in weight loss for 60 females at least 20% overweight and not involved in other treatment. The researchers interviewed each participant this time about their family background, educational background, and their belief as to their hypnotizability. The group was split into hypnosis and non-hypnosis groups with both groups being given weight-loss behavioral treatments and counseling. The results were very interesting. The group using hypnosis lost an average of 17 pounds at the 6-month follow-up. The group that did not receive hypnosis only lost 1/2 pound. They also found that “hypnotizability” and social and educational backgrounds had nothing to do with the results.

    A meta-analysis (a study correlate the results of multiple studies) concluded that people undergoing hypnosis are losing anywhere from about 2 to on average 16 1/2 times more weight than when they do not use hypnosis, and that “this clearly indicates that hypnosis should be used by anyone who is serious about weight loss.”
